Speak out, take charge: Premier’s message to women

Premier Ramathuba urges women to speak out against abuse, calling for unity to end the suffering of women and children.

LIMPOPO – The Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, has urged women to speak out against all forms of abuse to help end the killing of women and children.

She made this call during a Women’s Day celebration and fun walk held at Mazwimba grounds in Hakhakhu on August 9.

The well-attended event began with a 5km fun walk led by Ramathuba, along with various MECs, mayors, traditional leaders and community members, before she addressed the crowd.

Focusing on the importance of physical activity, Ramathuba noted that exercise helps people feel fitter and can reduce the risk of illnesses such as high blood pressure and diabetes.

“We have found that most women often develop illnesses because their bodies are no longer active,” she said.

Ramathuba highlighted the suffering endured by women and children, many of whom have been maimed or scarred for life by those they trusted to protect them, she said.

“We are here today to show that real men care for their families, which is why we are openly condemning abuse in the presence of our traditional leaders. We will continue advocating for this until all our women and children feel safe.”

Mayors from various municipalities around Limpopo as well as members of Legislature.

She expressed concern over the alarming levels of violence against children and reiterated the need for people to respect life.

Ramathuba called for collaboration between government, civil organisations, community members, traditional leaders and various structures to combat violence against women and children.

“If we can join hands and work together in partnerships, we can win the war against women and child abuse,” she added.

Ramathuba also spoke about the challenges many women face, including poverty and abuse, which she attributed to a lack of independence and economic freedom.

“God did not bring you into this world to be beggars, but to be independent people with economic freedom that will exempt you from abuse and exploitation. This can only be achieved if women are united.”

She encouraged women to change their mindset and take responsibility for their own lives.

“Women will continue to be the subject of ridicule and be exposed to poverty and abuse if they do not change their mindset. God brought you here for a purpose,” she concluded, urging women not to rely on others to lead their lives but to take charge of their own destinies.
