Support offered after special learner’s death in Seshego

The news of the learner's passing spread through Seshego on Sunday morning, raising concerns about the circumstances of his death.

POLOKWANE – Psychosocial support is being provided to learners and staff following the death of a 17-year-old learner at a special school in Seshego on Saturday. The learner passed away in his sleep at a dormitory, and an inquest is currently underway to determine the cause of death.

While Grace and Hope School has experienced the loss of learners in the past, this is the first incident to occur on school premises.

The school serves a large population of learners with special education needs, many of whom live on campus full-time and visit home periodically.

The news of the learner’s passing spread through Seshego on Sunday morning, raising concerns about the circumstances of his death.

In response, Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya visited the school on Sunday to offer support. She emphasised the importance of counselling for the affected children, particularly those who may have witnessed the incident or were close to the deceased.

“Some lived with him in the same dormitory, others attended the same class – they should be prioritised in being informed professionally about his passing,” Lerule-Ramakhanya stated.

She noted that the school has a resident occupational therapist, two nurses, a psychologist and a social worker to assist learners during this difficult time.
