Seshego Stadium gears up to host PSL matches after upgrades

POLOKWANE – The Seshego Stadium is gearing up to host major events, including professional soccer matches from the Premier Soccer League (PSL), in the coming months.

The last major event held at the stadium was in 2016, during the Multichoice Diski Challenge tournament featuring South African football giants Kaizer Chiefs and Polokwane City Football Club.

In addition to sport, Seshego Stadium has been a popular venue for musical concerts, church services, and various entertainment activities, all of which have significantly boosted the local economy over the years.

Mantlako Sebaka, the manager for sport and recreation at the Polokwane Municipality, announced that the stadium is currently undergoing extensive upgrades and is expected to be ready for use in the first quarter of 2024/25.

“The upgrades were mainly focused on overhauling the pitch, levelling it, planting grass sods, installing drainage systems for both the athletic track and playing pitch, installing turnstiles, revamping and reinstalling irrigation systems and a borehole, pitch perimeter fence, revamping players’ change rooms, and lastly, painting and revamping ablutions. The Polokwane council allocated R19m for these upgrades in 2023/24,” Sebaka stated.

He added that once the upgrades are complete, the facility will provide new opportunities for local hawkers and businesses in Seshego to offer their services and products during events.

Lekelaka Lehufa, a resident of Seshego, highlighted the anticipated economic benefits for the area.

“Small micro-enterprises and informal business owners will benefit from the stadium. Fast food outlets will be able to make more money when there are events. The municipality must expedite the process because community members will support all the events that are planned for the venue,” Lehufa said.
