MEC joins Nelson Mandela Centenary Walk kickoff

King Mokonyama embarked on a 900km walk from Polokwane to Durban supported by the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture and the Limpopo Sports Confederation.

POLOKWANE – The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Jerry Maseko teamed up with Malesela ‘King’ Mokonyama on Monday to kickstart the annual Nelson Mandela Centenary Walk at SABC Park.

The initiative, part of International Mandela Week celebrations, aims to raise awareness for social issues, spread love, and inspire communities.

Mokonyama, supported by Polokwane residents and members of the MK Party, began his 20-day journey from Polokwane on July 15, aiming to reach Durban by August 3.

This epic walk honours Nelson Mandela Day (July 18), covering nearly 900km – a challenging and inspiring feat for the 63-year-old Limpopo athlete.

Speaking to Polokwane Observer, Mokonyama highlighted the significance of his walk as a lead-up to Mandela Day and highlighted its purpose in raising awareness through his non-profit organisation, Centenary Walk for Tata.

“Leading by example is crucial for all South Africans, and my approach just happens to lead by kilometres,” he remarked.

Beyond physical endurance, Mokonyama aims to inspire youth and promote community activity through sports and health.

The Limpopo Sports Confederation supported his journey with warm track suits and shirts, facilitating his mission to engage with various communities during his walk, including taxi ranks and other public spaces.

Mokonyama plans to update the public on his journey via social media upon his return, continuing to spread his message of inspiration and social awareness.
