Wheels500 Trust supports family in need

Wheels500 Trust event raises funds for wheelchair for Lorenzo, a 2-year-old born prematurely with cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

POLOKWANE – Members and supporters of the Wheels500 Trust enjoyed an evening of culturally diverse music performed by Neil Sandilands and his band on Friday evening.

Before the musical festivities, an important milestone was reached for two-year-old Lorenzo Houy.

His parents, Jacques and Carlien, were awarded a portion of the money raised with Polokwane Round Table Impala 157 from last year’s event.

This contribution will help them purchase a proper wheelchair for Lorenzo, who was born at 28 weeks weighing just 1.44kg and facing numerous complications.

“He was under intensive care for 74 days and suffered a brain bleed that caused brain damage. He is cortically blind, meaning his eyes work perfectly, but his brain cannot interpret the visual information. He has cerebral palsy affecting both sides of his body, more severely on the right, and he also has epilepsy,” his mother, Carlien, explained.

She also gratefully accepted the cheque from FNB on behalf of the family, thanking contributors for their support.

Attendees enjoyed Sandilands’ music along with good food, drinks, and company throughout the evening.

One of the organisers, Sanè Bornman emphasised that the work of supporting those in need of wheelchairs, who do not qualify under government social development standards, is never achieved single-handedly by Wheels500.

She acknowledged the significant help from Vencor, Vleislapa, M. Du Bruin, Ivy Park Liquor Zone, Exclusive Properties, CJ Makelaars, AL3 Boerdery, Cam’s Photography, Etkeila Insurance Brokers, and FNB in making the event a success.
