PAC athlete Moloko on his viral Comrades video

Moloko Makgatho, known for his eagerness to help others regardless of race, culture, or gender, attributes his selflessness to his upbringing.

POLOKWANE – Moloko Makgatho, a veteran member of the Polokwane Athletic Club, has been lauded by the athletics community for his exceptional display of camaraderie during the Comrades Marathon.

Makgatho assisted an elderly woman in crossing the finish line, showcasing the true spirit of the marathon.

Makgatho, known for his eagerness to help others regardless of race, culture, or gender, attributes his selflessness to his upbringing.

“I grew up in a family where we shared the little we had. The unselfish love from the heart and that of God is what I grew up knowing. I feel sad when I become helpless and regretful if I feel I should have done something in certain situations. So I often take my chances whenever I can and pray to God that it is a decision I will not live to regret,” he shared.

Describing the events that led to his gesture, Makgatho explained that his natural instincts kicked in when he saw the woman struggling.

“We tried talking, but the noise from the crowds drowned us out. She seemed to want us to leave her behind, but I kept assuring her we would not. I kept updating her on the time left, ensuring it matched my wristwatch and the big finish arch.”

Makgatho aimed to finish the race in 10 hours and succeeded, earning the Robert Mtshali medal.

“My target was 10 hours with no pressure. After Rocky’s bus threw me off halfway, the second bus caught me in time, but it was too slow. Together with Tebogo from Emalahleni Athletics Club, we decided to leave the bus and managed to run an average of 5:30/km in the last 20 minutes. It was a blessing, and I was still feeling strong. Helping someone else felt like my turn to give back. I had no pain or discomfort during and after the marathon, thanks to my training schedule.”

Recently elected as an executive member responsible for communications, Makgatho is dedicated to growing and sustaining the club for future generations.

“I actively volunteer when requested. The club’s management is always eager to listen and apply member feedback for improvement,” he said.

Thabana Makgohloa, chairperson of the Polokwane Athletic Club, praised Makgatho’s supportive nature.

“That is his character. He is not selfish and volunteers his services at the club. We are blessed to have him. We were not surprised to see him helping the old woman; that is who he is.”
