Commercial explosives confiscated at the Beitbridge Border Post
Commercial explosives concealed in bags were confiscated by police at the Beitbridge Border post after a vehicle crossed into South Africa from Zimbabwe.
POLOKWANE – Two men are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of smuggling and possession of explosives following their arrest in the early hours of Thursday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the men, aged 32 and 42-years-old, were arrested for attempting to smuggle commercial explosives into the country.
“The concerted efforts by the police at the Beitbridge Border Post to eradicate the smuggling of illegal goods into the country continues to yield positive results. The suspects were arrested just after midnight as they crossed into South Africa from Zimbabwe,” his statement read.
According to Ledwaba, the Toyota Quantam with a trailer that the duo were travelling in was stopped and searched and police discovered commercial explosives concealed inside bags.
“Members of the Musina Explosive Unit attended to the scene and 124 blasting cartridges and at least 109 safety fuses were confiscated,” he said.
The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the members for their vigilance.
