R1.96m restroom project: Completion date set for Tom Naudé Park

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala explained that delays have resulted in penalties accruing at a rate of R982.69 per day.

POLOKWANE – Completion in the construction of restrooms at the Tom Naudé Park has been extended towards the end of next month as the contractor on the project has been ordered to rebuild certain elements. The project has a budget of R1.96m.

Polokwane Municipality’s Matshidiso Mothapo said parts of the building had to be demolished after what seemed like inaccurate measurements.

“The builders were ordered to demolish up to foundation level and rebuild at their own cost in line with the building regulations”.

February 6 was the envisaged completion date according to the contractor, but a revised schedule now points to April 26. Delays have resulted in penalties accruing at a rate of R982.69 per day, starting from the initial completion target.

On Tuesday, the municipality’s Thipa Selala explained that “the brick mortar was inadequately filled into the joints, and the stretcher bond showed inconsistencies due to improper staggering of vertical joints by half a brick in each layer, which is essential for wall strength and preventing cracks from spanning the entire wall height”.

Polokwane Observer reported in 2019 that the municipality had foreseeable plans to build restrooms for the often packed park of party revellers over weekends and holidays.
