Limpopo Class of 2023 boasts 7.3% improvement

Since 2021, Limpopo was among the worst-performing provinces, but with the latest improvement this was no longer the case.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Class of 2023 boasts a 79,5% pass rate for their 2023 National Senior Certificate exam, which is a 7.3% improvement from the previous year.

Nationally, the highest pass rate yet since 1994 has been achieved at 82,9%.

Shortly before the results were released to matriculants last week, the province was also bestowed with an accolade from the Department of Basic Education as the most improved province in terms of the matric pass rate.

Since 2021, Limpopo was among the worst-performing provinces, but with the latest improvement this was no longer the case. In addition, the number of bachelor passes was also better compared to previous years.

In terms of bachelor passes, the best-performing circuits were Pietersburg Circuit with 1 442 followed by Mankweng (649) and Malamulele with 576.

These improvements were announced by Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya during a celebration of the province’s cream of the 2023 crop at The Ranch Resort on Friday.

Parents of best performing matriculants, principals, teachers, government executives including the Premier, Chupu Mathabatha and city Mayor John Mpe with their entourages graced the momentous occasion.

The best performing independent school in Limpopo is Northern Academy Secondary where 427 candidates wrote the exam and 220 learners achieved bachelor passes, the MEC said.

Taxila Secondary School received several high performance awards including third best “public ordinary school” in the Pietersburg Circuit with 291 candidates who wrote and 197 bachelor’s admissions.

The best performing learner in the province, Nthabiseng Lefophana is from Bokamoso Secondary School in Seshego under the Pietersburg Circuit.

Her best performance was in life sciences with 297 out of 300 and full marks for mathematics.

“The upwards trajectory is a testimony that we have dedicated men and women who are passionate about their work,” Lerule-Ramakhanya emphasised.

The department announced that the best performing matriculants would receive sponsorships from the business community.

“Books, laptops, bursaries, money, irons, kettles and so many other goodies that students need when they arrive at a room to begin a new life in higher education, will be handed out.” the MEC mentioned.

Mathabatha said the stakes were high for this year’s matriculants to break the 80% pass rate barrier.

“Part of the National Development Plan includes the achievement of 80% and the class of 2023 has shown that it is achievable.

“I expect an increase from this year’s Gr 12s.”
