Polokwane to host SA Softball Championship in March 2024

Ten provincial softball teams including the University Sports South Africa (Ussa) softball team will contest for top honours at the tournament.

POLOKWANE – As part of growing softball in the province and giving the sport national exposure, the Limpopo Softball Association will host the South African Softball Championship at the Polokwane Cricket Club on March 17-23 next year.

Benny Boshomane, the deputy chairperson of the association, said 10 provincial softball teams including the University Sports South Africa (Ussa) softball team will contest for top honours at the tournament.

“It will be our fifth time hosting the event in the city. As the defending champions, we will show other teams that we are not a fluke but ready to defend our title. We will be working with our stakeholders, namely Limpopo Tourism Agency, the Department of Sport, the Polokwane Municipality and the Limpopo Sport Confederation to deliver a memorable tournament.”

Boshomane stated that they would have loved to host the event at the softball stadium currently under construction at the Peter Mokaba Stadium precinct.

Benny Boshomane, deputy chairperson of Limpopo Softball Association.

“That was our wish, but unfortunately there is no swift movement at the facility. We are just end users, we don’t know what is happening between the municipality and the contractor.

“The stadium would help in the course of exposing softball in the province to the world. We would be able to stream the matches and Polokwane would be put on the world map. The stadium was supposed to have been completed last year, but we will just have to wait for the municipality and the contractor.”

He mentioned two masters teams, Moletlane Texas and Red Ants, who will represent the province at the National Masters Tournament set for Bloemfontein from September 20-24.

“They will compete with national teams and softball clubs from the Southern African Development Community. The Red Ants won the tournament in 2021 while Texas won in 2020. We have good teams and they will make us proud.”
