Eagle’s Nest maths brains excel at Horizon Maths Competition

The competition encourages schools to start a mathematics team and teach beyond the borders of their classroom syllabus.

POLOKWANE – Every year between March and May, Eagle’s Nest Christian School learners participate in two phases of the Horizon Maths Competition. This year, three of their learners made it to the top 50.

The aim of the competition is to reach as many individual learners, irrespective of their race, creed and social or financial background. The competition also encourages schools to start a mathematics team and teach beyond the borders of their classroom syllabus.

During the competition that was held at the Star Phys-Math Tuition Centre in the city, round two leads to the awards to the provincial top 50.

This year, 4 095 learners from 18 public and private schools entered for the first round.

Gr 7 mathematics Olympiad facilitator and teacher Nkosana Nkala, who accompanied learners on their trip, said Gr 7 learner Kgothatso Kgatla obtained position 31 with a bronze medal and a certificate; Tshilidzi Muvhango ended 16th with a bronze medal and a certificate, and Xhihlenga Nkuzana ended seventh with a silver medal, receiving a bicycle and a certificate.

“The prizes are just for motivation. The ultimate goal is the impact that the competition has on learners. We appreciate the learners and the parents for the effort and the dedication,” Nkala said.

One statement Eagle’s Nest principal Mac van den Berg believes in, is that learners are truly eagles, and not chickens. “We always assure them that victory is guaranteed because unlike others who trust in horses and chariots, our trust is in God. We would like to thank Nkala for his tireless effort to assist our learners to achieve these results. Well done to all those who participated,” Van den Berg said.
