R3,2m to refurbish the Polokwane Traffic and Licensing station

The new area will see six cashiers, a customer waiting area with benches where 100 customers can be seated, and ablution facilities.

POLOKWANE – A total of R3.2m from the current financial year has been set aside for the first phase of the refurbishment of the Polokwane Traffic and Licensing station located in Ladanna.

The phase is expected was set aside for completion by March 24.

The current scope of work includes construction to the licensing station’s waiting area and upgrades to the logistics office, according to Polokwane Municipality spokesperson, Thipa Selala.

The completion of the project in its entirety will depend on budget allocations in the coming financial years, he added.

For years now, customers to the centre have complained about queues and the limited number of people that can be assisted on any given day.

The new area will see six cashiers, a customer waiting area with benches where 100 customers can be seated, and ablution facilities.

While this development augurs well for the city, the project has not come without quarrels among temporary employment beneficiaries, many of who seem to come from the Disteneng area, better known as the Old Pietersburg.

In July, a group of roughly a 100 residents protested against what they termed was the unfair employment of 30 temporary workers, who they said seemingly flouted the agreed-upon rule to pick employees through a community employment database.

The concerned group alleged that those who were employed were picked along political party lines.

On the day of the protest, the group blocked the entrance to the premises.

Selala in the meantime called for calm, saying the project will later on require additional personnel who will render various services for the benefit of the city.

“Recommendation and approval by council for the employment of cashiers and other personnel, who will be responsible for services later on, will be done at a later stage,” he added.
