Female Limpopo traffic officer killed on duty by reckless driver

The 31-year-old officer was part of a group of graduates who started working as traffic officials at the beginning of August.

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety Florence Radzilani has urged motorists to abide by the rules on the road and treat officers with respect following the death of a traffic officer attached to the Collins Chabane Local Municipality.

Sonia Hlanganani (31) was killed on the R524 in Ximixoni village outside Saselamani earlier today (August 11) while performing routine duties.

Transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene says the officer was killed when a minibus hit both her and the light duty vehicle she was inspecting.

“Reckless driving is stated as a possible cause of the incident and a case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Saselemani Police station,” her statement read.

It is unclear whether an arrest has been made as yet.

Chuene said Hlanganani was part of a group of young people recruited by the local municipality in July 2022 for a learnership programme and graduated in July this year.

“The deceased was part of a group of graduates who started working as traffic officials at the beginning of August,” she said.

Radzilani further encouraged motorists to take extra precaution this weekend and follow the rules of the road.
