Mogalakwena Muni introduces ‘no permit, no entry’ policy at landfill sites

The new bylaw is in an effort to stabilise waste management in the municipality with the view of eradicating illegal dumping.

MOKOPANE – Illegal dumping is a major challenge in the Mogalakwena municipal area as well as the non-operation of the municipal dumping site which is currently in the process of being upgraded.

This was recently mentioned in the State of the Municipality Address, delivered by Mayor Ngoako Taueatsoala, who added that there are a few policies in place to tackle these challenges.

“In ensuring that waste disposal and landfill sites are fully operational and clean at all times to avoid unexpected disruption to the service, the municipality introduced a new policy for waste transportation by private consumers.”

From September 1, a municipal bylaw on waste transportation will be in effect.

“We are re-instating the principle of ‘no permit, no entry’ at our landfill sites. The cost of the permits range up to R7 863.50, depending on the weight and what the resident is disposing of.”

He said residents can apply for a permit at the Community Services offices, at the entrance at Ruiter road where the clinic used to be.

The new bylaw is in an effort to stabilise waste management in the municipality with the view of eradicating illegal dumping, for which an ‘adopt a spot policy’ was introduced.

“Illegal dumping hotspots have been identified and various initiatives which among others, encourage members of the community to apply for any identified spot that is likely to result in illegal dumping, will be implemented,” the mayor said.

He added that the municipality will be rolling out a programme for the provision of 240 wheelie bins and also provided skip bins at strategic locations to curb illegal dumping.

He added that the municipality will be expanding the waste collection services to villages and peri-urban areas.

“We want to ensure that the environment and health of our community is not compromised. So, if we want to see this municipality return to a state of normality, we will all need to play our part.”
