The court hoped to hear from 14 witnesses over the duration of the trial, after it initially got underway in March, to be postponed to May.

The weapon with which the victim was shot, is a key exhibit in the state’s case against the former taxi driver.

On June 13, four witnesses took the stand. The first one was Sgt Mminwa Makgaola, who was first on the crime scene. He testified that Rakoma was already dead at the time. On June 14, the owner of the weapon and one of six more witnesses whose testimonies are expected, failed to appear in court.

Lentswe Laka, representing an organisation that fights gender-based violence, said the man’s family had been trying to locate him without much success days prior.
