Tom Naudé learner selected for SA Commonwealth Youth squad

Kubura Abubakar is one of the top netball players in the province and her inclusion in the national team will pave the way for other players in the province.

POLOKWANE- Gr 11 learner at Tom Naudé Technical High School, Kubura Abubakar was selected for the South African Netball team that will represent the country at the Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games pencilled for August 4-11 on the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago.

Kubura also excels in athletics, having won gold medal in the triple jump South Africa School Athletics in Germiston in Gauteng in March.

She was part of the Limpopo u/18 netball team that ended eighth at the National Telkom Netball Championship held in Cape Town from July 11-14.

The 16-year-old, who has represented the country before in netball said it will be the first time traveling to a Caribbean country.

“I look forward to the experience in a country where I have never been before. The only foreign country I have travelled to is Nigeria which is my native country. This is my third national cap and I am happy. I have already started with the preparations and I am working hard in the gym to improve my skills and physical strength. I want to help the team win the games and I want to learn from other national players and other players from different countries.”

Expected at the event are more than 1 000 athletes and para athletes from various countries.

Rose Malotane, provincial netball coordinator said they are proud of the young player’s achievements.

“She is one of the top netball players in the province and her inclusion in the national team will pave the way for other players in the province. She must raise the flag of the province high at the games.”
