Boxing spectacular at Meropa a treat for fans

In the mouth-watering fight, Khensahosi Makondo became the new World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental junior middleweight champion after defeating DRC national Jacques Muvud.

POLOKWANE- Limpopo Champions successfully staged a boxing tournament dubbed Power to the Youth as part of Youth Month celebrations at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World in Polokwane on Friday evening.

In the mouth-watering fight, Khensahosi Makondo became the new World Boxing Federation (WBF) Intercontinental junior middleweight champion after defeating DRC national Jacques Muvud by points.

Last year, Muvud and Makondo fought to a draw in an exciting all-African junior middleweight bout.

Khaya Busakwe has also successfully defended his SA lightweight title. He defeated Ayanda Nkosi by unanimous decision. In the provincial title fight, Rofhiwa Maphupha defended his title against Janson Mudzanani. Maphupha won by technical knockout in the first round.

Makondo said he was ready for the fight. “I will be headlining the show. I am fighting for WBF, and I will put up the best show like I always do. I am ready for my opponent. I want to knock him out with a technical knockout. I will go in there and put into practice what we have practiced in the gym. I am going to bring the Lion out of me, and I hope that I will make the province proud,” he said prior to the match.

Lightweight winner Trevor Nghonyama from Malamulele said his was not an easy fight.

“Zolile Miya is an experienced boxer, he has more fights under his belt than me. He had 18 fights and this is my sixth since I started boxing professionally. I knew it was not going to be an easy fight, so I took a risk and won.”

Lightweight winner, Cedrick Ntaketo Chauke from Mahonisi village outside Malamuele was equally excited at his win.

“This was my first time fighting a tall guy such as Ntokozo Msibi. The fight was tough because my opponent was taller than me, but I managed to knock him down. Now I am ready to fight six rounds. One thing that I will consistently do is to train every time. Once you stop training, it becomes tough to train for a fight. There were few opportunities to finish the fight, but I took my time and outboxed Msibi in every round. On this occasion, I was looking to dish out punishment for four rounds. It was personal, as we had a lot to prove,” said Chauke.
