WATCH: Children first this Child Protection Week

Child Protection Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of the rights of children in accordance to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and Children's Act (Act No. 38 of 2005).

POLOKWANE – Children’s rights are at the forefront as National Child Protection Week is commemorated from May 28 to June 4.

Child Protection Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of the rights of children in accordance to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and Children’s Act (Act No. 38 of 2005).

This year’s theme is ‘Let us protect children during Covid-19 and beyond’.

Review spoke to the South African Police Service’s Victim Support Centre project manager Regina Mailula who explained the importance of Child Protection Week.

Mailula said they will be visiting schools around the city to educate learners about their rights, bullying and abuse.

She added that issues such as bullying can stem from an abusive home background wherein children are present during incidents of domestic violence.

“It is important for children to know their rights which is why we will be visiting schools across the city,” she said.
