Most pensioners develop illnesses because their bodies are no longer active but exercise can reduce the effects thereof.

LIMPOPO- Fiscal fitness, another way of keeping the elderly fit and active, was hosted by Ma-Aerobics in Thohoyandou Block F on May 15.

The event was filled with fun walks for pensioners.

The brain behind the non-government organisation, Ma-Aerobics, under the instructor and coach, Adelaide Mashila said they organised a fun walk and run, aerobics and also invited doctors to give those who are present some health tips.

According to Mashila, the fun walks and run started in Block F’s CTM sports centre by walking for five kilometres through Block G and Extension.

More than 59 elderly women, many unemployed or pensioners, joined the initiative, she said.

“When they retire, some pensioners develop illnesses because their bodies are no longer active, but after doing some exercises it can reduce some of the effects of disease, for example in terms of high blood pressure and diabetes.”

She said her organiation invited speakers including doctors and specialists, to address participants on health issues.

Mashila told media the that the campaign, held on May 14, was their first organised walk.

“From now onwards, we will host more events of this nature, keeping the elderly healthy.”

One of the pensioners who attended the fun walk, Granny Judith Mphephu (74) of Thohoyandou Block F, said after joining Ma-Aerobics in April, her health has improved every day.

Mashila invited more pensioners to join them at their regular events.
