NMS learner collects bags for the blind

Yusrah Hendricks collects plastic bags for learners at the Siloe School for the Blind who use them to make baskets, door mats and carpets to sell in the community.

POLOKWANE- Northern Muslim learner Yusrah Hendricks, through her social outreach programme, collected 40 plastic and refuse bags which she will donate to the Siloe School for the Blind in Zebediela.

The 13-year-old learner says learners at the Siloe school use plastic bags to make baskets, door mats and carpets and sell these in the community.

“I felt the need to assist them because they are blind, and most of them don’t have time to collect the bags.

“I took it upon myself to do it on their behalf because they are doing something great with the bags.

“My target is 150 before the end of this month and then I will deliver them to the school.”

Takura Warinda, the principal of the school said he is proud of Yusrah’s initiative and urged learners and community members to assist her. “Her initiative forms part of the ethos of our curriculum, as one can see that she is organised and creative.

“She is also in touch with the Muslim religion which teaches them to be selfless, and to care and think about others.

“Those who want to donate refuse and plastic bags can bring these to the school at Lawton Road in Polokwane.”
