SA Fast 5 selection for Tommie learner

Kubura Abubakar says she prayed to be chosen for the Fast 5 team and is so happy to have been chosen for the team.

LIMPOPO – Star triple jump athlete and netball player from Tom Naudé Technical High School, Kubura Abubakar, recently received the news that she had been chosen for the u/18 national Fast 5 netball team.

She is one of only 12 players who will represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Youth Games on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, from August 4-11.

More than 1 000 athletes and para-athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 will compete at this event, the seventh edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Review earlier reported on Kubura, when she became the SA titleholder in the girls u/17 triple jump event at a distance of 11.26m – which is also her personal best distance.

Last year, she was chosen for the South African Schools Netball team.

At her school, Kubura plays goal attack for the first team, but says she can seamlessly also stand in as goal shooter.

Her Fast 5 feat is something she is very proud of.

“I prayed to be chosen for the Fast 5 team and I am so happy to have been chosen. When I heard I made the team I was quite relieved.”

The Fast 5 netball format sees only five, instead of seven players, on court.

The match is played in quarters, and each quarter last for only six minutes.

A team can also nominate a quarter in which to score double points.

“A Fast 5 match is pretty tiring, but it is a good workout.”

Kubura practices netball every weekday and on some Saturdays too.

Her coaches, Zandrè van der Vyver and Linda Coetzee are both very proud of her accomplishment.

“She works hard and make us, and the school proud. We wish her all the best.”
