Help Khutšo get to Dubai for an international spelling bee

Khutšo Rakumako's mother described her as a highly-driven child who has aspirations of studying abroad upon completion of Gr 12.

POLOKWANE – Mitchell House learner Khutšo Rakumako has qualified to compete in the fifth edition of the Inter-Continental Spelling Bee Championship, which will be held in Dubai on September 16.

Khutšo qualified after obtaining third position in the championship’s national spelling edition, which she entered as a private participant.

She told Polokwane Review that she took an interest in spelling bees in 2019 while she was a learner at Eagle’s Nest Christian School and the school enrolled her in a Master Spelling Bee contest.

She then proceeded to the South African National Master Spelling Bee competition where she ended seventh.

She received a high school scholarship for Mitchell House, where she is currently educated.

“I am super excited and would really love to go and represent South Africa at this prestigious event. This competition is big and it is the first time that I’ve advanced to the international round of the spelling bee. It will also be the first time I travel outside of South Africa.”

The family is kindly asking for financial donations in order to make this happen for her.

Her mom, Tebogo Rakumako describes Khutšo as a highly-driven child who has aspirations of studying abroad upon completion of Gr 12.

“Exposure to the international space will definitely broaden her horizons. The fact that the competition will be held on her birthday is an added bonus, so being able to go there will be the best birthday gift ever,” she said.

She appealed to residents to assist them in raising R24 000 which she says will cover the competition registration, accommodation, airport transfers and food.

By the end of June, they need to have paid for competition registration and accommodation in the amount of R14 000.

By the end of July, they need to have booked flights, so that they can apply for visas in time. This cost is estimated at R10 000.
