Vuselelo uses cricket to instill discipline in learners

Vuselelo Gumede, teacher and former provincial player, now shares his knowledge with learners as Flora Park Comprehensive High School's cricket coach.

POLOKWANE – Former provincial cricket player and now teacher at Flora Park Comprehensive School, Vuselelo Gumede, says he now instils discipline and shares his knowledge with learners.

Gumede teaches life sciences to learners in Gr 11 and 12 and natural sciences to learners in Gr 8, and is also the cricket coach at the school.

“I got hooked when one of my sister’s teachers introduced her to cricket while she was still in high school, and she would come home with the equipment and teach me what she had learned.”

When he first arrived at Flora Park Comprehensive High School in 2014, he introduced cricket as a sport in the same year.

During his high school days, Gumede won several player of the tournament titles, played on district level and was selected to play provincially and continued his cricket journey well into his university days.

As a child, Gumede said he was fascinated by biology and the topic of physique.

He used cricket to overcome the challenges he faced in this field, and this sparked his interest in what foods are good for sportspeople.

“Because cricket requires discipline, this is also something I instill in learners, on and off the field, so they can become better people in their communities too.”

Gumede holds a B.Sc degree and a level two coaching certificate, currently working on his level two qualification.
