Ivypark learners collect food items for indigent families

The initiative is one of the school's top flagship programmes aimed at improving the lives of the needy.

POLOKWANE – Learners of Laerskool Ivypark through the assistance of their parents collected non-perishable food items which they will donate to unemployed and homeless people during the festive season.

The initiative is one of the school’s top flagship programmes aimed at improving the lives of the needy.

According to deputy principal Douw Grobler the learners started collecting the items in January.

“We started collecting the food immediately after the school opened at the beginning of the year. Each learner was asked to at least bring one item and the response was just amazing. We cannot quantify the figure but we have enough to cater for a lot of people. We will also donate some food to the learners whose parents have lost their jobs and are unable to provide for their families.”

Grobler thanked the parents for their contribution and swiftly responding to their call.

“We could not have managed to collect so many food if it was not for the assistance of our lovely parents. They were there with us from day one and we want to thank them for their contribution which will make a huge difference to the recipients.

Unathi Sibiya, newly elected headgirl thanked the learners for their participation and commitment to the initiative.

“As fellow learners I am touched by how the learners were willing to ensure that they bring more items to the school. We have a lot of food and we are happy to do something for someone. All the items will be packaged nicely in boxes and taken to the beneficiaries before we officially close the school so that they can enjoy the festive season.”
