POLOKWANE – Streaming services such as Showmax and Netflix have made it possible to watch your favourite series or movies on demand, whenever you want to.

This however makes it even more difficult to decide between the magnitude of options available – that’s where we come in.

Showmax:

Series: Hacks

Season 2 continues to explore the evolving mentorship between the acerbic Deborah and her young, entitled writer, Ava (Hannah Einbinder, nominated for back-to-back Emmys for this breakthrough role). Season 2 has a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where it’s the fourth best-reviewed show of 2022 so far.

 

Movie: Monster Hunter

Shot in South Africa and Namibia with Moonlighting, Monster Hunter is a #1 box office hit inspired by the global video game phenomenon of the same name. When an unexpected sandstorm transports Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich from Resident Evil) and her unit to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower.

 

For the kids: Dune

Round up the teens (13+ only) for an epic family date night, with the multiple-Oscar-winning 12th-biggest box office hit of 2021. Directed by Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049), the sci-fi epic stars the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgård, Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista. 

 

Netflix:

Series: Blood & Water

After crossing paths at a party, a Cape Town teen sets out to prove whether a private-school swimming star is her sister who was abducted at birth.

 

Movie: Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich

Stories from survivors frame this documentary detailing the sex-trafficking trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, a socialite and accomplice of Jeffrey Epstein.

 

For the kids: Wednesday

Smart, sarcastic and a little dead inside, Wednesday Addams investigates a murder spree while making new friends – and foes – at Nevermore Academy.
