Indigent Mankweng households urged to register for municipal subsidies

The municipal courtesy applies only to households whose monthly income amount to R4 720.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality is inviting indigent household representatives in Mankweng to visit their local municipal offices today (October 13) to register for a programme that would help them receive due municipal benefits.

The municipal courtesy applies only to households whose monthly income amount to R4 720. Those who qualify will receive subsidies of 6 000 litres of water; 100kWh of electricity and a 100% subsidy on refuse; sewerage; basic electricity and property rates.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala says this follows a recent community engagement meeting were the municipal council was prepared to write off debt from as far back as February 2016, on the condition that smart meters be installed in respective homes, and the flat rate of R272 is abolished.

However, those whose debt had accumulated from March 2016 were told to make payment arrangements of up to 24 months with the municipality.

As a result, some residents, in the meeting raised a concern for indigent members who could not afford to to pay their debts and this option was introduced.

Selala says those who qualify must bring their relevant certified documents.

This includes:

– Identity document (ID) of applicant, spouse, and other members over the age of 18
