Majorette championships give local tourism a boost
Over 1 700 learners from schools across the country participated in the 44th annual South African Majorette and Cheerleading Championships last week.
POLOKWANE – The chairperson for the Limpopo Majorette and Cheerleading Association (LMCA) Moses Ngobeni said the 2022 South African Majorette and Cheerleading (SAMCA) Championships hosted between October 3-8 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium benefitted the City of Polokwane economically.
Over 1 700 learners and officials from various schools across the country participated in the event which Ngobeni said served as a litmus test to gauge the sport’s reslillence post Covid-19.
“LMCA is also proud to have raised a hand to host the 44th annual championships in Polokwane and most hospitality establishments in the city were fully booked as a result. The event boosted the local tourism sector,” he said.

Ngobeni said the province has laid a conducive environment for all teams and they were happy to compete.
“The survival of our sport, like any business venture, depends largely on innovation. Coaches, adjudicators and administrators together with school governance, parents and friends have to work hand-in-hand otherwise the sport will die and that will be a pity.”
He added that the 2022 SAMCA championships will be remembered for its uniqueness.
“All teams, irrespective of previous levels, competed at the same level. The scenario gave an opportunity for the developing teams to compete with the elite teams and offered a rare opportunity for development, he said.”
