Family in Vhulaudzi loses 10-bedroom house to fire

Livhuwani Muofhe said he saved many years for the house and that the estimated damage to his property amounts to roughly R700 000.

LIMPOPO – The Muofhe family from Tshedza in the Vhulaudzi area had their lives disrupted when their 10-room house was destroyed last Saturday.

The owner, Livhuwani Muofhe, said when they left home to attend a funeral that morning, everything was in order, except that the area had been experiencing load-shedding at the time.

On their way back from the funeral, still a distance away, he noticed that a house was on fire.

“I ran to our house with neighbours and community members helping, but by the time we got there, the house had already been engulfed in flames. We watched helplessly and could not save anything. I have saved for many years for this house. As I am not working, I don’t even know how I am going to replace the loss.”

According to Muofhe, the estimated damage to his property amounts to roughly R700 000.

For now, the family is staying with relatives as they have nowhere else to go. Despite their loss, Muofhe said he was just happy that nobody was harmed.

Ward councillor Edwin Mulefu, was one of the first people to arrive at the scene and said he had received a call from one of the residents about the fire at around 10:00.

“I rushed there and found fire-fighters fighting the flames but there was nothing they could save as the fire spread rapidly. As a community we are very sorry for Muofhe and his family.”

Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that a case of arson has been opened.
