Priest rescued after hours trapped on Chuenespoort Mountain

The man from Makgofe outside Seshego was treated for minor dehydration and shock after being rescued by the SAPS Air Wing and Water Wing Rescue Unit.

POLOKWANE – The SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, on Monday (September 5), rescued a priest (33) from the Chuenespoort Mountain in the Lebowakgomo policing area.

George Mondane, a zionist priest from Makgofe outside Seshego, went to the mountain in the early hours of Monday for a secret prayer session and later felt uneasy and hallucinated.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said Mondane lost his way back and had no food or water.

“He wandered around the mountains and managed to call for help as he his phone was fully charged. He was safely rescued at 18:00 following a search operation by members of the SAPS Air Wing and Water Wing Rescue Unit,” he said.

Mojapelo added that Mondane was treated for minor dehydration and shock before he was taken home.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has warned people to be extra cautious when exercising or performing their rituals at hazardous places as this often results in resources being diverted from crime prevention activities for search and rescue operations.

“We however commend the members for succeeding in rescuing the victim alive,” Hadebe said.
