Stabbings at Vhembe schools leads to assault charges

A security guard and a Gr 12 learner were recently stabbed in separate incidents at two separate schools in the Vhembe region.

LIMPOPO – Two cases of assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm were opened at the Thohoyandou police station, following two separate incidents which happened at two schools in the Vhembe region on August 30.

According to acting Vhembe region police spokesperson, Serg Vuledzani Dathi, the first incident occurred at Duthuni village’s Ligege High School, where it is alleged that a 38-year-old male security officer, Thivhileli Mashavha was on duty and performed his daily routine at the main gate of the school when he was called by the principal to attend to a certain classroom where a Gr 10 learner was causing havoc.

According to Dathi, the security officer proceeded to the classroom with a colleague and dragged the troubling learner out of the school premises. That is when the said learner stabbed the officer in the upper body and he sustained serious injuries. He was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The learner had fled the scene, and is still at large.

In another incident, which happened in Tshivhulani village near Sibasa at Nthetsheleseni Secondary School, a Gr 12 learner, Ngelekanyo Nyamande (21) was stabbed by another learner.

According to the victim he was writing his trial examination when he needed to use the bathroom. On his way back there was an altercation with a group of learners. The matric learner was stabbed and sustained severe injuries.

Police added that the injured learner was taken to hospital in a critical condition and a suspect has been arrested.

The principal of Nthetsheleseni Secondary School, Tshimangadzo Mammburu said he was shocked about the incident.

“I understand that there are some learners who involve themselves in abusing drugs and alcohol, and I urge the local police to show up unannounced at my school to search for dangerous weapons in order to avoid situations like the one that happened.”

Education spokesperson, Mike Maringa confirmed the incidents.
