POLOKWANE – The young Kimura Shukokai Karate star from Polokwane, represented South Africa at the European Open Tournament that was hosted in Switzerland from July 21-23.
Marais has been a member of the Kimura Shukokai Karate Club for a few years and continues to make strides in the sport.
He recently showcased his skills at the Kimura Challenge Tournament in Johannesburg where he won two gold medals.
His stellar performance secured his seat on the trip to Zürich where he managed to reach the quarterfinals in the kata division.
Sensei Marcia van Niekerk told Polokwane Observer that this was James’ first tournament where he could compete against world-class opponents.
“To compete against the karatekas from other countries was a big experience and learning school for him. He will learn from this and be even better in future international tournaments. I am proud of him for doing so well at a tournament where he received international exposure for the first time,” Van Niekerk said.
