SANRAL to open Musina Ring Road on Friday

The Musina Ring Road is expected to significantly reduce the travel time between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

LIMPOPO – The wait is finally over – the Musina Ring Road will be open to motorists from Friday (August 19).

The South African National Road Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) announced the opening of the new section of the N1, west of Musina, in a statement.

“The project, known as the Musina Ring Road, was undertaken to divert traffic around Musina to the west and will significantly reduce the travelling time between South Africa and Zimbabwe. It will also alleviate the current congestion in the CBD of Musina,” the statement reads.

The project consists of an 8km greenfields single carriageway freeway to form the western ring road around the town. The alignment deviates from the existing N1 section 29 alignment just south of Musina and ties back into the existing alignment just north of the town.

Thousands of heavy motor vehicles use the N1 every day and pass through the Musina CBD. These vehicles add to the traffic congestions, Sanral project manager Hennie Kotze previously said.

“Motorists who travel to Musina or who wish to access Musina will be able to do so from the N1 at the Nancefield and Musina Interchanges, on the northern and southern sides of the town, respectively,” explained Kotze as he wished motorists a safe journey on the new section of the road.

The cost of the project is R640m of which, according to Kotze, 14% of the contract value was allocated to 14 targeted enterprises from the Musina municipal area.
