Polokwane police maintain there’s no rise in vehicle theft

Provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Mamphaswa Seabi rubbished reports of an increase in vehicle theft cases, saying criminals target any vehicle.

POLOKWANE – “One car stolen is one too many.”

These are the words of provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Mamphaswa Seabi after the recovery of vehicles stolen from the Polokwane policing area, which were found in Groblersdal on July 10.

The exact number of recovered vehicles could not be clarified and Seabi said specifications may hinder continuous investigations as no arrests have yet been made.

Of the discovered vehicles, is a Toyota Hilux that belongs to Polokwane Mayor John Mpe, which was stolen on July 6.

On the same day, a similar vehicle was stolen elsewhere in the city. Seabi rubbished reports of an increase in vehicle theft cases, saying criminals target any vehicle.

He says their vehicle theft units throughout the province work around the clock but are not overwhelmed.

To ensure the safety of vehicles, Seabi said drivers shouldn’t leave valuable items in the vehicles as these often attract criminals.

“After using your remote to lock the car, test if the doors are indeed locked, as criminals use lock-jamming remotes to render a car’s remote useless.

“Never agree to be helped by a stranger at a secluded place rather seek a safe place. Criminals may remove your registration number and follow you for a distance to later show you that registration plate. Do not stop until you are at a safe spot.”
