Three arrested in Polokwane for Edu Department tender scam

The two women and man masqueraded as employees of the department and demanded money from a local security company to secure a tender.

POLOKWANE – The Department of Education said it has not advertised any security tender and urged the public to not fall prey to scams in its name.

Their warning follows the arrest of three people on Tuesday (July 19) who masqueraded as employees of the department and approached a Polokwane based security company and demanded money to assist with the awarding of a security tender.

Education media liaison officer Mike Maringa said the owner of the security company suspected foul play and set a trap after he was lured to deliver a sum of cash before he could be issued with an appointment letter.

“Three suspects, two women and a man were arrested on the spot just before the exchange of cash as per the suspects’ demand,” he said.

Maringa said departmental officials will not demand money for advertised tenders and urged the public to always report when approached to pay for tenders.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the arrest and said a case of fraud is being investigated by the police in Polokwane.
