Red flag for avid runner Johan

Johan van Graan (76) is well-known in the running community and has over 40 years' running experience.

POLOKWANE – The avid runner has completed the Comrades Marathon 11 times, but of late has devoted his time and energy to parkrun.

“Where else do you get the benefits offered by parkrun, at no cost? You simply have to register on www.parkrun.co.za to receive your barcode. Thereafter you can run, jog or walk at any parkrun event in the world. Your time and position in your age category then gets sent to your email address and will also be available on the website.”

Johan was recently honoured with a red flag for his involvement in parkrun.

The red flag was given to him because he has completed more than 50 local parkruns, more than 50 parkruns in other provinces and has worked as a volunteer 50 times.

“I have completed 280 parkruns at 62 locations across the country. At parkrun you participate in a safe environment in the open air without any commitment and the competition is only yourself.”

Johan and the run director for the city, Jaco Mostert, urge residents to make use of this social opportunity to improve their health and to become fit.

Polokwane parkrun takes place every Saturday at 08:00 in the winter and 07:00 in the summer. The venue is the park opposite Tom Naudé Technical High School.
