As a result, transport media liaison officer Mike Maringa said the N1 south has been temporarily closed.

“Motorists travelling between Polokwane and Pretoria should use the R101 as an alternative route as the road will be closed for a while,” he said.

Maringa said the driver of a VW sedan lost control of the vehicle, veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a minibus taxi.

“The driver was burnt beyond recognition and five people in the taxi were declared dead on the scene,” he said.

Maringa added that five people sustained serious injuries while four more people are in a critical condition.

Emergency services and traffic officials remain on the scene.
