Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the victim went to the man's shop mid-morning as she was sent to buy airtime vouchers.

LIMPOPO – The Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said police are deeply concerned by incidents of abuse and sexual exploitation towards vulnerable children.

Hadebe’s remarks follow the arrest of a 36-year-old shop owner in Namakgale outside Phalaborwa for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl in Zone B on Sunday (May 8).

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the victim went to the man’s shop mid-morning as she was sent to buy airtime vouchers. “Instead of giving her the airtime, the shop owner allegedly locked the door and raped the girl. He let her go and the victim reported it to her family when she got home,” his statement read.

Mojapelo said the police were notified and a case of rape was opened. “The suspect was apprehended at his shop on the same day and appeared before the Namakgale Magistrate’s Court for formal bail application today (May 10).”

Hadebe called on the community to join police in the fight against Gender Based Violence and femicide by reporting all cases to the nearest police station.

Investigations into the matter continue.
