500 UL students to receive one meal a day during food drive

The food drive started on Monday and aims to ensure that students waiting on NSFAS allowances and those without funding to have at least one meal a day.

POLOKWANE – The Young Women’s Desk in collaboration with Give Back to The Community are hosting a test week food drive for students at the University of Limpopo.

The food drive began on Monday with the aim of ensuring students who are waiting for NSFAS allowances that have been repatriated for venue-based assessments and those without NSFAS funding, have at least one meal a day.

“As much as we would have loved to give students three meals, it’s not possible but we hope that the one meal they do receive will assist,” student activist, Isabella Makhura told the Polokwane Review.

Makhura added that initially their target was 100 students, which then grew to 300 but now stands at 500 because of the influx of students.

She shared that donations are coming in but they are not enough. “We don’t have enough because we spent what we intended for today, yesterday, due to the high numbers of students who came,” she said.

They are accepting donations in the form of food or money.

“We would appreciate donations of loaves of bread, cheese, butter and polony with which we make the sandwiches as well as juice,” she said.

Monetary donations can be made to the following account:

Capitec Bank

Account number: 1641693299

Reference: food parcels

Cellphone number linked to account: 067 301 9703.

Cardless transactions are also welcome.  To make food donations contact Makhura on 060 795 5381 or Nomagugu Mthombeni on 067 301 9703.
