Precise vascular care is in Legae’s veins

With a passion for vascular surgery, Dr Legae Mogase relocated to Polokwane in November last year to provide precise vascular care to the city's patients.

POLOKWANE –Β His services are available at Netcare Pholoso Hospital, Limpopo Mediclinic and Pietersburg Provincial Hospital.

Legae treats diseases that affect blood vessels such as aneurysms, chronic and acute arterial insufficiency, varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, strokes and trauma to blood vessels, among others.

β€œThe greatest difficulty is access of vascular surgery in remote and rural areas. The solution is to reach out to rural areas through the Department of Health’s rural health matters initiative,” he explained.

He told Polokwane Observer one of the most delicate surgeries he performs includes a carotid endarterectomy procedure on stroke patients, where the internal carotid artery gets clamped to successfully perform the procedure.

Legae said that he and other vascular surgeons reduce the risk to cause a stroke by using an in-line shunt to maintain brain perfusion while the internal carotid artery is clamped and they have a cerebral oximetry to monitor brain perfusion.

He completed a six-year bachelor of medicine and surgery degree at Wits University, a five-year degree in general surgery at Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, a five-year masters degree of medicine in surgery (SMU) and a two-year sub-specialty degree in vascular surgery from Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

Legae, who is stationed at Netcare Pholoso Hospital, is the founder of Limpopo Vascular, a registry platform for all vascular surgeons in the province.

β€œAt Limpopo Vascular we are passionate about quality health care service delivery, where the needs of the patients take centre stage,” he concluded.
