Dogfighting: 4 Pitbull terriers surrendered to Polokwane SPCA

The four dogs were found on a property in Mahwelereng where it was evident that illegal dog fighting activities had occurred.

POLOKWANE – Four pitbull terriers are currently being held at the Polokwane SPCA after they were surrendered following a dogfighting incident.

According to a statement by the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA), their Special Investigations Unit received information relating to a dogfight that had occurred in a rural village in the province on December 8.

“The NSPCA began investigating the matter and called on the assistance of the Polokwane SPCA after the investigation revealed that the injured dogs were kept at a property in and around the area of Polokwane. Four pitbull terriers were found on the property where it was evident that illegal dogfighting activities had occurred. All of the perpetrators found to be involved will be charged and further investigation is being undertaken,” their earlier statement reads.

Polokwane SPCA manager Selma Landman confirmed to Review that the dogs were treated by their vet, Dr Eljane van Tonder.

“Animal cruelty charges were laid at the Mokopane SAPS and inspector Moloko Manaka is handling the case. The two males were used for dogfighting and the two females for breeding. The one male was badly injured, while the second male is not use to human contact and is extremely vicious,” she explained.

Landman said they are awaiting a court date, but they are hopeful it will be in January, 2022.

“Dog fighting is a barbaric practice that depicts a lack of humanity in the people who are involved in this activity. There is no excuse for inflicting such terror and cruelty on an innocent being that cannot speak or defend themselves. The NSPCA extends our gratitude to our colleagues and the Mahwelereng SAPS officers for their assistance in this case, as well as to Dogs Trust for their continued support toward the NSPCA’s Special Investigations Unit for cases such as this one,” their statement reads.
