Muni to open remembrance garden in honour of Covid-19 victims

Polokwane Municipality spokesperson Thipa Selala explains the first phase of the project, which started today, involves the levelling of grave hills at the Silicon Cemetery. 

POLOKWANE  – Plans have been put in place to develop a garden of remembrance, dedicated to those who lost their lives due to Covid-19, at the Silicon Cemetery (New Polokwane Cemetery) on the R37 road.

In a statement on Thursday, municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala said the municipality is in the process of levelling grave hills at the Silicon Cemetery. This is part of maintenance of the cemetery to allow for planting of lawn and trees which will be succeeded by the development of a garden of remembrance in honour of those who have lost their lives due to Covid-19.

“This is as per the mandate from the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.”

He explains this process is required for aesthetics, health and safety as well as for accessibility purposes. “The municipality appreciates the cooperation and understanding of all affected stakeholders.”
