Light tremor rattles Polokwane

The epicentre of the seismic-like event was mapped just north of the city. Did you feel it?

POLOKWANE – A light tremor which was felt in parts of the city on Monday evening has left residents rattled.

The light shaking started at around 17:30 with the epicentre reported just north of the city. “The epicentre of the seismic-like event was approximately 3.7km north of the city with a depth of 10kmm” reads the report on Volcano Discovery.

The organisation rated the magnitude of the seismic-like event to around 3 but confirmed that activity was ‘likely no quake’.

The activity lasted between two to five seconds and was reportedly felt throughout the city and even as far as Haenertsburg.

A few residents reported their experiences on the organisation’s platform…

“Three small waves that rattled the windows” is how a resident in Bendor explained the seismic event. Reports of a loud thunder followed by light shaking came in from Eduan Park while a resident from Flora Park explained that they felt nothing but heard ‘three booms, one after the other’.

“We thought it was still the blasting of rocks behind the hospital, but today it felt so close and more shaky, we even thought a thunderstorm is coming,” said a resident from Mankweng.

In Haenertsburg a resident reported a ‘single vertical bump’ with very weak shaking that lasted around two seconds.
