R20K damages incurred after man gets stuck under GNT bus

The bus has been taken of its route, and will be unavailable for weeks to come says GNT.

POLOKWANE – Great North Transport (GNT) recently incurred costs of almost R20 000 after a man was stuck under a bus in Polokwane and some cables had to be cut in order to free him.

The incident took place at a local bus rank and GNT spokesperson Patrick Monkoe says the driver was alerted by the passengers about the man stuck under the bus just as he was about to move.

Monkoe says they are unsure what the man was doing under the bus.

“This man got underneath the bus from the rear and moved along the prop shaft to the gearbox. The bus was stationary and off-loading commuters when this incident happened. Cables connecting the brake terminal had to be cut as law enforcement officials attempted to pull him out but he was resisting and had wrapped himself around cables underneath the bus.”

When they did manage to remove him the man was removed by police but it is unclear whether any case has been opened.

Monkoe says the damage incurred by the company include towing fees of around R6 000 and around R10 000 to pay for the repair of the damaged cables.

On top of that GNT could not run its normal operations with one bus taken out of route.

He says commuters using the bus route driving along the Bellingsgate and Mashashane area will be affected as the bus is taken off route and they assume that it might take around two weeks to get it back on route.

“More penalties will be incurred at this same bus will not be able to operate for two weeks. Passengers are inconvenienced during this time as the company does not have enough buses to replace it.”
