Child-headed family receives food from Lufuno Charity Foundation

Bonus first reported on the family from Makweng in August, which explained how the children lost their parents a few years ago and the eldest daughter is now the primary caregiver to her four siblings, as well as a neighbouring child who also lost her parents.

POLOKWANE – A child-headed family of five from Mentz recently received a donation of a month’s supply of non-perishable food from the Lufuno Charity Foundation.

BONUS first reported on the family in the article titled ‘Child-headed family gets help‘ in August, which explained how the children lost their parents a few years ago and the eldest daughter is now the primary caregiver to her four siblings, as well as a neighbouring child who also lost her parents.

Their neighbour, Makhene Moeketse, contacted the Lufuno Charity Foundation after he read about them in BONUS’ sister publication, Polokwane Observer. Moeketse had taken it upon himself to help the children wherever possible. He said he called the foundation a few weeks ago and asked if they would be able to help the family.

“I called the foundation and their founder and chairperson Ledile Chuene was very kind when I spoke to her, which made me feel even more comfortable to ask for help. She agreed to meet with me and I then directed them to the family.”

Chuene said they identify child-headed households in the Mankweng, Seshego and Polokwane areas and help to meet their basic needs like food.

“After we heard about the family, we were more than keen to step in and assist. We collaborated with Zororo-Phumulani and many other individuals who were able to buy and deliver the food to us. As soon as we gathered enough, we donated it to the family. We gave tinned food, maize meal, milk, cooking oil, samp and other items,” she said.

The girl who runs the house expressed her deepest appreciation to the foundation and the community for the donation.

“At least we will have food to eat before we go to bed. My siblings will also be able to eat something before they go to school. We are very grateful. God bless,” she said.
