En garde, pret, allez for KZN bout

Fencers from Sello Maduma Fencing Academy, University of Limpopo as well Fire Birds Academy are ready to compete at the KwaZulu-Natal Open.

POLOKWANE – The national ranking event is pencilled for September 25 and 26 and local fencers were hard at work last week as they sharpen their skills ahead of the open.

Sello Maduma Fencing Academy head coach and founder Sello Maduma said he was impressed with the commitment shown by the fencers. “The preparations have gone well and the fencers are eager to do well at the event. We are impressed by the zeal and commitment shown by the fencers from the University of Limpopo. Most of them have never fenced before but they showed qualities of good fencers.”

Maduma said prior to the KZN assignment, the fencers will take each other on at a provincial fencing tournament in Polokwane on September 11.

“The tournament will be a precursor for the KZN duel. We will take 30 fencers to the national event and some have never competed on a national level. The provincial event will provide these fencers with an opportunity to test themselves on that level. The University of Limpopo will have 15 fencers take part in the provincial tournament which will be a platform for them to test their abilities against the best fencers in the province.”

He added that medals will be presented to the best performing fencers on the day. “We will have u/12, u/13, u/16 as well as senior men and women matches. There will be medals for the top four performers,” Maduma said.
