Name changes on the cards for major towns

Advertisements and notices have been published, calling on the people of Thulamela Local Municipality to propose new names.

LIMPOPO – Thulamela Local Municipality has passed a resolution for the changing of various street names and buildings in major towns including Thohoyandou, Sibasa and Mutale.

The newly elected Mayor, Humbulani Mulovhedzi said this move is in line with the municipality’s vision of city status by 2030. Advertisements and notices have been published, calling on the people of Thulamela to propose new names for streets and facilities, which reflect the input of the communities within Thulamela.

“More than 50 of our streets and buildings have been named to honour the lives of our political activists. These include people who contributed in the fields of education, business, politics, cultural activists and those in the struggle for gender equality.”

Mulovhedzi added that the process of naming the streets and buildings had been in the municipality’s plans for the past three years and they are going to proceed with the process in phases so that they can cover all stipulated streets and buildings in their areas. One of the community members in Thulamela Municipality, Calvin Singo welcomed the initiative.

“We are happy that political activists including Rodgers Tshivhase, George Phadagi, Dick Ralushai and many more should be remembered and honoured. We hope that they will also remember traditional leaders for the role they played in uplifting their communities and allowing government to implement projects,” said Singo.
