Health department hands over new wheelchair to 116-year-old gogo

The gogo's hardships was noted by Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba during a vaccination home visit to Mukula village.

LIMPOPO – During a vaccination home visit to two centenarians, Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba recently realised that at Muledane Block J, the 116-year-old granny Nnditsheni Singo has to negotiate life in an old and broken wheelchair.

The visit was also made to grandfather, Samuel Ramugondo (100) of Mukula village to see to it that he too is being vaccinated in the comfort of his home. Ramathuba said she was touched by the situation.

“I instructed the senior management of the health department in Vhembe to see to it that the granny, who will turn 117 in August, receive a new wheelchair. We cannot celebrate our vaccination programme, when our older people are using old equipment,” said Ramathuba.

On July 23, a team of the health department in Vhembe visited the Singo family in Muledane to hand over the new wheelchair.

Fhulufhelo Luvhengo, an occupational therapist at Tshilidzini Hospital said they hope the granny will now find life a little easier.

“We told her family members how best they can use the wheelchair and take care of it,” said Luvhengo.

One of the granny’s daughters, Olive Makwarela said the family was thankful to the department for the gesture, “now the granny will be able to go to the toilet, travelling smoothly because of the new wheelchair”.
