Feed your toddler the right stuff

The nutrition that is given to a child in the early stages of infancy can stay with them throughout their lives.

POLOKWANE – As a parent, it is often not uncommon to wonder whether you are feeding your child enough or too much.

Polokwane Observer spoke to dietitian Kulani Mtileni who explained the importance of nutrients.

Toddlers are at a critical stage of their lives in terms of growth and development and nutrition plays a huge role.

“They need appropriate vitamins, like vitamins A, C and minerals based on their age. They also need adequate carbohydrates, fat and protein in their diet,” he explained.

It is important to consider portion sizes of these foods as too much can result in weight gain.

“Too much carbohydrates can turn into fat in their body. Too much fat in their diet can slow down digestion,” he said.

Mtileni advises that sugary drinks be avoided as well as ready-to-drink teas and other supplements.

“Any over-the-counter toddler supplements such as multivitamins must first be confirmed by their dietitian or pediatrician who can determine whether there is a need,” he added.

Dietary fibre is important for growth, however, too much of it can cause bloating.

“It can also make them full for longer which will in turn make them not get other important nutrients. Limit giving toddlers one type of food the entire day, for example, soft porridge as this may result in malnutrition,” he concluded.
