Fencers at UL eager to compete

Fencing Olympian, Sello Maduma is happy with the progress made by the University of Limpopo Fencing Club in the past month.

Maduma said he is also overwhelmed by the interest shown by aspirant fencers.

The club started with nine fencers who are students at the university and currently boasts 26 fencers. “The club is growing exponentially. Most of these fencers are female students and that is encouraging. What excites me the most is their zeal, their will to learn the sporting code and also to excel. They are a passionate group of students and they are ready to compete,” Maduma stated.

He also added that plans are at an advanced stage to host a club competition aimed at giving the new fencers an opportunity to showcase and test their fencing skills.

“We are not badly affected by the Covid-19 regulations, because fencing is a non-contact sport. We are a Covid-19 friendly sport and we hope to stage a competition in July or August. We are encouraged by the commitment shown by the fencers. They are ready to compete and we are looking forward to a great spectacle.”
