Rugby players raring to go
Head coach of the Noordelike Rugby Club, Frederick Romijn said all rugby clubs and players in the province are excited to return to the playing fields.
Romijn said clubs hope they will be given the green light by the South African Rugby Union (Saru) that they can play competitive matches from 8 May.
In March the South African Rugby’s Executive Committee subsequently approved amateur rugby, including school rugby, to commence training with immediate effect under strict conditions, after a recommendation was made by the working group of Saru, consisting of members of the national union, provincial unions and the South African Schools Rugby Association (Sasra), resolving that the current infection rates were on a downward curve.
Saru agreed that amateur rugby may return to training, but not play any matches. Since then certain contact has been allowed during training under strict regulations that were set in place. Now everyone is anxious to start playing competitively again, and is just waiting for the go-ahead from Saru.
“All the clubs and players are ready and excited. This is a big deal for them given the number of months they had to endure without any matches. Everyone is keen to play.
“We were told that spectators will not be allowed in the stadiums and we will adhere to that. We are just happy to play competitive rugby again,” Romijn said. “We do not have any fixtures now, however, everyone is training hard in preparation for 8 May.”
